What is Grade Weighted Average (GWA) Meaning and Its Importance
Most universities assess students by their academic score (GWA), a numerical representation (a metric) of a student’s academic performance (neccesary to obtain scholarships or admission to a well-known university). It is an overall measure of a student’s academic performance over a particular period or semester. The number of Grades & Units obtained & the weightage of the Subject measures it.
It is very crucial as a metric and hence, students are concerned about achieving a decent GWA. This is because many educational institutes are concerned about and often set a minimum GWA for admissions or scholorships. A good GWA can help you gain scholorships and also good jobs & hence a good financial future.
Are GWA and GPA the Same?
GWA and GPA are metrics with the same purpose: to calculate the student’s academic performance. However, GPA is represented as Letter Grades, e.g., A or B.… Similarly, GWA is judged as a numerical grade. GPA grades start at 0 and end at 4, which is also considered the highest.
In the case of GWA:
Some Universities accept 1 as the highest grade:
Grade (5.0 Scale) | Equivalent Letter Grade | Meaning |
---|---|---|
1.00 | A+ | Excellent (Highest) |
1.25 | A | Excellent |
1.50 | A- | Very Good |
1.75 | B+ | Good |
2.00 | B | Satisfactory |
2.25 | B- | Above Average |
2.50 | C+ | Average |
2.75 | C | Below Average |
3.00 | C- | Passing |
3.50 – 4.00 | D | Conditional/Remedial |
5.00 | F | Failing |
However, some of them accept the 4.0 as their highest grade:
Scale Grade | Equivalent Letter Grade |
---|---|
4.0 | A |
3.5 | B+ |
3.0 | B |
2.5 | C |
2.0 | C+ |
1.0 | D |
0.0 | F |
However the 4.0 Grading System also has another Variation which is as follows:
Scale Grade | Equivalent Letter Grade |
---|---|
4.0 | A |
3.7 | A- |
3.3 | B+ |
3.0 | B |
2.7 | B- |
2.3 | C+ |
2.0 | C |
1.7 | C- |
1.3 | D+ |
1.0 | D |
0.7 | D- |
0.0 | F |
Some Universities like Far Eastern University accept GPA as their Grade Representation. However, our tool, GWA & GPA Calculator, will help you quite a bit. It calculates not only GWA but also its Equivalent GPA.
Why Calculate GWA
GWA is quite important because it helps you get an overview of your academic performance and because many universities around the world offer scholarships, keeping a close eye on the general weighted average of students.
Not only this but even if you want to be admitted into a well-known University, Many of them commonly have a Minimum GWA requirement for admissions. Moreover, when you apply for an entry-level job, your hiring company might be interested in looking at your academic performance by GWA.
Formula
The formula to calculate the GWA is quite simple, and The Mathematical Equation is as follows:
GWA = Sum of Weighted Grades / Total Units
In this formula:
WeightedGrade – It is the Weighted Grade / Value for the Course
Units – it represents the No. Of Units or Credit Hours for the ith Course
i – Starts from 0 and goes up to n
n – represents the No. of courses
While this calculation will take a lot of your precious time, Our GWA Calculator will solve it in no time, Without any complications.

Different Methods of GWA Computation
There are several ways to calculate GWA, and different institutes might accept a GWA based on their preferred methods. To make it easier for you, we will break down five methods.
- Basic Average Method – For High School Student
This is the simplest method. You have to add up all your subjects’ grades and divide them by the number of subjects. Since there is no weightage system in High Schools, It is quite easy:
Practical Example: (75 + 89 + 91 + 82) ÷ 4 = 84.25
- Weighted Average Method – For Weighted Subjects
Some subjects are more important in calculating the academics of the students. Hence, you need to ensure that each grade is multiplied by the subject’s weight and then divided by the total weight.
- Percentage-Based Method
In this method, Your GWA is the average of the percentages you’ve scored, and Many schools prefer this method too. Mostly, those prefer the percentage grading system over the letter grading system.
- Cumulative GWA Method
This method can be applied when you need to find the GWA for several semesters. To do so, you’ll need to add up the GWA for each semester and divide it by the number of semesters.
Practical Example: (79 + 92) ÷ 2 = 85.5
- Adjusted GWA Method
Sometimes, certifications or awards can boost your GWA, so consider these extra points. I hope you have covered all of the different methods of GWA Calculation. Use them effectively based on your educational institute’s requirements.
How To Compute Your GWA if You Are an Alumnus
If you’re an Alumnus – A former student, You’ll first have to find your grades from Transcripts of Records (TOR) or any other platform your institute prefers. Then
Find the grade of every class.
Multiply the grades of each class with their respective unit credits. For example, If you had scored a GWA of 1.25 on a major subject with unit credits 4, then 1.25 x 4 = 5
Now, add all the values for each grade.
Afterward, Sum up all the values calculated in step #3 and divide it by the unit credits, e.g., if unit credits are 129 or something, then the sum value you’ve found will be divided by 129

A practical example of the working of the GWA calculator
This practical example is based on the 100-point evaluation system in Phillippines.
Note: Our GWA Calculator will only deliver accurate results when all required fields are filled in. If any input is missing, the results may not be accurate. So, ensure that all values are entered correctly before hitting the Calculate button.
Step 1: Identify the Weights for Each Category
Each subject consists of different components with specific weight percentages. Let’s take an example of the subject Mathematics, where the grading components have the following weights:
Grading Category | Weight (%) |
---|---|
Written Work | 40% |
Performance Task | 40% |
Quarterly Exam | 20% |
These weight percentages are assigned based on the DepEd grading system to reflect the importance of each category in the final grade.
Step 2: Enter the Student’s Marks for Each Category
Now, suppose a student has received the following marks:
Grading Category | Marks Obtained | Total Marks |
---|---|---|
Written Work | 85 | 100 |
Performance Task | 90 | 100 |
Quarterly Exam | 80 | 100 |
The scores represent the student’s performance in each grading component.
Step 3: Calculate the Weighted Grades
To determine the weighted grades, we multiply the marks obtained by the respective weight percentage (expressed as a decimal).
Grading Category | Marks (%) | Weight (%) | Weighted Grade |
---|---|---|---|
Written Work | 85 | 40% | 85 × 0.40 = 34 |
Performance Task | 90 | 40% | 90 × 0.40 = 36 |
Quarterly Exam | 80 | 20% | 80 × 0.20 = 16 |
Now, we sum up all the weighted grades:
34 + 36 + 16 = 86
Thus, the final GWA for Mathematics is 86.
Step 4: Input the Units for Each Subject
Many schools assign credit units to subjects based on their difficulty and importance. Some subjects may carry higher weightage than others.
Let’s assume:
- Mathematics has 3 credit units
- English has 2 credit units
- Science has 3 credit units
- Social Studies has 2 credit units
To calculate the overall GWA, we need to input these credit units into the calculator along with the subject grades.
Step 5: Click the Calculate Button
Once all details are entered correctly, simply click the “Calculate” button on the GWA Calculator. The tool will process the information instantly and display:
✔ Final GWA
✔ Equivalent GPA
✔ GWA to Percentage Conversion (if required)
How to Calculate GWA in College? – GWA Calculator College
In the Philippines, students calculate their GWA by adding up all the weighted grades of their subjects and dividing the total no. of units (credit hours)
If you’re wondering how to calculate your weighted grades, we will do it for you.
Further Examples of how to compute general weighted average in college
Let’s assume these are the grades, credit units, and number of courses for a student:
Course | Grade | Credit Units |
---|---|---|
Mathematics | 3.50 | 3 |
Physics | 3.00 | 4 |
Chemistry | 2.75 | 3 |
Computer Science | 3.25 | 3 |
English | 3.00 | 2 |
Step 1: Multiply Each Grade by Its Credit Units
We now find the product of the grades and their respective units:
Course | Grade | Credit Units | Product (Grade × Units) |
---|---|---|---|
Mathematics | 3.50 | 3 | 3.50 × 3 = 10.50 |
Physics | 3.00 | 4 | 3.00 × 4 = 12.00 |
Chemistry | 2.75 | 3 | 2.75 × 3 = 8.25 |
Computer Science | 3.25 | 3 | 3.25 × 3 = 9.75 |
English | 3.00 | 2 | 3.00 × 2 = 6.00 |
Step 2: Compute the Total Sum
Now, we sum up the weighted products and total credit units:
Total Weighted Grades = 10.50 + 12.00 + 8.25
Total Weighted Grades:

Step 3: Compute the Final GWA
Now, we apply the formula:

Thus, the General Weighted Average (GWA) is 3.10.
However, you also have to make sure about what university you’re looking at and what grading system they use; some universities take 1.0 as the highest grade, and some use 4.0, So dont get confused.
Furthermore, Some universities, such as those in the United States, accept GPA as their metric to access the students, and for that, you’ll first need to find out which of the equivalence grading systems they prefer. Some Universities accept this one:
However, some accept this one:

Scholarships and College Admissions:
A better GWA can help you in further studies by helping you with financial aid through scholarship programs, which might be why you land a great job at the end of the day.
Addressing Common Misconceptions about GWA
GWA as the Sole Indicator of Success:
“A single sheet of paper can’t decide my future ” – But coin always has two sides” ~ Thomas Edison.
Nowadays, Just a numerical grade is seen as an individual’s total capabilities, and his special capabilities and talents are neglected; GWA also has the same case. It should never be viewed as the sole metric from which an individual is judged.
Overcoming Failure and Bouncing Back:
The process of being successful is full of failures, and no one can become a billionaire in one day. It’s the case for Elon Musk’s son when he died. So, a student should always remember that a few failures might give you lessons that mold the path to success in the future.
